Manuel Felguérez
Mexican Muralist
Although pressured by his mother to become a doctor, he found his calling when he traveled to Europe in 1947. So inspired by the beautiful artwork, especially the masterpieces of William Turner, Felguerez decided to become an artist. He studied in France, specializing in abstractionism, geometric-constructivism, and expressionism. His “sculpted murals” are a work combination of scrap metal, stones, and sand. Felguerez’s work was eventually accepted in Mexico as the overall attitude towards abstract art changed.
His exhibitions have been held in Tokyo, Brooklyn, Mexico City, San Francisco, China and Paris. He is still actively working, spending eight hours a day in his artistic production and traveling for his exhibitions. He experiments with computer program design, exploring the potential of this new medium. One of his biggest accomplishments is The Manuel Felguerez Abstract Art Museum in Zacatecas, inagurated in 1998.
